FP1 MOTIONAL engages in Mobility Data Sharing discussions at the TRA Conference

At the recent Transport Research Arena (TRA) conference in Dublin, Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking’s Flagship Project 1, represented by Philippe Wyssen, took center stage to discuss the transformative potential of the European Rail Data Space. The strategic session, titled “How to Achieve Transport Data Sharing,” provided a platform for key stakeholders from railway, aerospace, road transportation, and logistics to discuss challenges and strategies for more efficient data exchange.
Philippe Wyssen underscored the importance of the Rail Data Space initiative developed under the FP1 MOTIONAL program. This collaborative effort, which involves 12 partners, aims to dismantle data silos, and facilitate trustful and efficient data exchange across the rail industry and its interfaces with other transportation modes. “The Rail Data Space allows data providers to define the terms and conditions of data exchange, facilitating scalable data sharing while ensuring that data providers maintain full control over their data,” noted Wyssen.
The panel also delved into broader themes, such as the need for governance structures, common data sets, and alignment with EU policies like the EU Data Act. The discussions emphasized the necessity for an integrated, interoperable, and collaborative approach across all transportation modes to enhance the movement of people and goods across Europe.
Europe’s Rail FP1 MOTIONAL continues to advance its vision for a decentralized, secure, and open Rail Data Space with harmonized data models, enabling the creation of digital twins. The achievements and ongoing projects discussed at the TRA conference highlight Europe’s Rail’s commitment to innovation and its pivotal role in shaping the future of transportation.
