Rail4EARTH « Railways adaptation to climate change » European Workshop

On 3rd June FP4-Rail4EARTH gathered in a dedicated one-day Workshop many European actors of Adaptation to Climate Change at SNCF headquarters in Saint-Denis (France).

The fruitful exchanges were built around 14 presentations shared with about 50 participants to this workshop which make for a programme of great interest.

  • Anne Guerrero (Deputy Director for Ecological Transition – SNCF) welcomed the participants and introduced the day, 01 – Welcome – A. GUERRERO
  • Hubert Mullard (SNCF Voyageurs), leader of Rail4EARTH WP2 Adaptation to climate change progress and approach, explains the progress of the WP2 since the start of the project, 02 – R4E WP2 – H. MULLARD
  • Laurent Nicod (Alstom), Rail4Earth Project Coordinator, presented a proposal for complete treatment of the problem in 10 steps, the related uncertainties, and questions. 03 – R4E 10 steps – L. NICOD
  • Nicoletta Antonias (Head of Sustainability – Trenitalia Spa) presented Trenitalia’s climate change adaptation’s plan. 04 – Trenitalia’s climate change adaptation’s plan – N. ANTONIAS
  • Baptiste Eisele (Head of the Strategy and Forecasting Office – DGITM French Transport Ministry) explained the French National Climate Change Adaptation Plan (PNACC3), with the focus on resilience of transport and mobility and French Reference Warming Trajectory for Climate Change Adaptation (TRACC). 05 – French PNACC3 – B.   • Agathe Drouin (Climatologist researcher – Météo France) shared with the audience the scientific approach of the Reference Warming Trajectory for Climate Change Adaptation (TRACC). 06 – French-adaptation-trajectory – A. DROUIN
  • SNCF Climate change adaptation approaches and strategies were outlined by high-level representatives from SNCF companies:
    • Xavier BONNET (Climate Change Adaptation Project Manager – SNCF),
    • C. Le Dantec (Deputy Programme Manager, Climate Change Adaptation – SNCF Réseau)
    • A.  Gotheil (Head of CSR – SNCF Gares & Connexions),
    • V. Jacolin (Environment & Resources Manager – SNCF Voyageurs).
  • Idriss Pagand (Project Officer – ERA) presented the recently published ERA’s Report: Rail resilience to climate change – Impact of extreme weather events on the European railway system
  • Bardo Schettini Gherardini (Director Operations – EIM) showed EIM’s position paper:  Climate change and IMs.
  • Ethem Pekin (Head of Economic Policy and Sustainability – CER) showed CER’s position paper: A climate-resilient railway for Europe’s future: Priorities for the new European climate resilience framework.

To close the day, L. Nicod exposed a possible macro-planning for railway adaptation to climate change, and the related questions about planning, funding framework etc., and rose the question to the participants to set up a follow-up yearly meeting for Railway Adaptation to climate change. 14 – R4E ACC macro planning – L.
