From 18 to 21 of May, Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking played a leading role at the Transport Research Arena (TRA)...
Have you ever wondered how railway systems communicate with each other? Or how a planning system interprets infrastructure data, and how engineering data becomes usable for operations? The answer lies in a shared understanding.
In Europe, this common understanding is provided by the ERA Ontology. EU-Rail has clarified its principles and promoted its use, also developing – through its System Pillar – an extension of the ontology in the Control, Command and Signalling domain.
The TRA 2026 event saw a strong participation from EU-Rail projects, with numerous presentations, technical sessions, networking activities, and poster contributions showcasing cutting-edge research in sustainability, digitalisation, automation, passenger mobility, and next-generation transport systems.
Highlights:
The EU-Rail NEXUS Project strengthened its visibility across key international mobility initiatives in April 2026, showcasing its contribution to smarter, safer and more sustainable urban transport systems.
On 17 April, NEXUS joined the first-ever World Public Transport Day organised by UITP, highlighting its work on optimising metro operations, improving passenger experience and developing innovative solutions for urban rail and metro systems.
On 27–29 April, NEXUS participated in the ITS European Congress 2026 in Istanbul, under the theme “Bridging Innovation: Integrated, Safe and Seamless Mobility” – organised by ERTICO – ITS Europe together with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and European mobility stakeholders.
Between 29 April and 27 May, the FP1 MOTIONAL project organised a series of dissemination and validation events across Europe and online, bringing together railway stakeholders, industry experts and researchers to showcase innovative digital solutions shaping the future of European rail transport. The first online event “A Journey through the Future European Railway”, focused on digital foundations for a more connected and data-driven railway system. On 7 May in Madrid and online, the Seamless & Inclusive Mobility event reinforced FP1 MOTIONAL’s contribution to interoperable and digitalised railway systems supporting seamless cross-border mobility. In Paris and online on 12 May, the Intelligent Planning Dissemination Event gathered more than 100 participants from EU-Rail community for a day of keynote presentations and showcasing 27 demonstrations. On 13 May, an event in Stockholm at Trafikverket’s premises, focused on Cross-Border Operations, with a dense programme of demonstrations and discussions where Europe’s Rail Head of Innovation Pillar Nicolas Furo stressed the importance of keeping developing integrated solutions with a continuous innovation-to-deployment cycle. On 27 May the Dissemination Events series concluded in Borlange with the event “Real-Time Intelligence: The thinking railway responds faster than problems can spread”.
On 22 April, EU-Rail FP2-Morane-2 project consortium presented the project and the progress of testing activities in front of 600 industry experts and stakeholders gathering in Valenciennes for the ERTMS 2026 Conference, organised by European Union Agency for Railways (ERA). Consortium representatives showcase successful field test for the new on-board radio equipment in band n101 and towards 5G-based FRMCS, while upcoming tests include a large-scale validation of FRMCS in real operational environments.
EU-Rail project InBridge4EU published a new scientific publication titled “Evaluation of the safety ratio in the Eurocode for deck acceleration limit on ballasted railway bridges”. The study examines how ballasted railway bridges are subject to dynamic excitation from passing trains, which can cause excessive vibrations in the ballast bed depending on the train speed, resulting in track instability.
FP3–IAM4RAIL project has published three new videos showcasing project contributions to the digital transformation of rail through intelligent asset management, worker-support technologies, and mixed reality tools for infrastructure maintenance.

The EU-Rail 2026 webinar series “Status of FRMCS Deployment” continues with its second appointment, taking place on 17 June 2026, 10:00 – 12:00. In this webinar, David Rothbaum, Director of Business Development, Mission Critical Networks at Ericsson, will present the status of the work on technical deployment guidelines. The webinar will be moderated by Pascal Desaunay who will introduce the FRMCS Deployment Working Group at EU-Rail.
Karel Van Gils, Senior Programme Manager/Seconded National Expert at EU-Rail, delivered a keynote speech at this year’s Nokia FRMCS Interest Group Conference, held from 18 to 20 May in Espoo, Finland. During this by-invitation-only event, he addressed the need for early European knowledge building and preparatory work for the upcoming FRMCS deployment and highlighted the work of EU-Rail’s deployment group on practical FRMCS deployment topics. Karel also joined a panel moderated by Emanuele Di Liberto (Nokia), together with Dan Mandoc (UIC) and Alexander Ende (Funkwerk), discussing challenges and readiness across the full spectrum from onboard to trackside.

Our EU-Rail Pods4Rail project will celebrate its Final Event.
Almost three years ago, 15 partners from seven European countries launched the EU-funded research project Pods4Rail to develop new solutions for the transport of the future. The project, which brings together leading research institutions and highly innovative industrial partners, developed the concept for a digitised, decentralised mobility service with intermodal interfaces to different modes of transport.
During the event, project partners will share the motivation, goals, and results of the project and discuss the challenges of future mobility.
Interested participants are invited to join the event in person. Online participation will also be available.
