Rail is set to play an increasingly important role in Europe’s transition towards a more sustainable and efficient transport system. As rail networks face growing demand, ageing infrastructure and increasing pressure on capacity, maintaining and monitoring infrastructure efficiently is becoming essential.
Europe’s Rail (EU-Rail) has brought PRIME to life, a modular, autonomous robot designed for railway maintenance.
Its autonomy allows it to move and perform inspections or maintenance tasks independently. It is also energy-independent, thanks to its batteries. Its onboard intelligence enables it to adapt to situations it encounters during its missions. These features set PRIME apart from traditional railway inspection vehicles.
Its modular design allows it to accommodate a variety of accessories, enabling it to adapt to different missions and maintenance needs.
PRIME is a prototype. A derived MVP (minimum viable product) will be developed after 2028.
TRL 6 by the end of 2026. It will reach TRL 7 in 2028.
PRIME complements the range of existing inspection and monitoring solutions. It can also serve as an alternative to traditional inspection vehicles in contexts that require a high degree of flexibility.
For maintenance operations, which were not developed as use cases in Phase 1 but were addressed in Phase 2, robots such as PRIME have no direct competitors among the solutions developed within the Flagship Project 3. They area instead intended to complement the monitoring system developed within the project.
PRIME reduces the need for human labour while making maintenance tasks easier and supporting greater gender equity in the workplace.
In some cases, PRIME can replace diesel-powered machines, helping to reduceCO2 emissions.
EU-Rail’s PRIME is a highly flexible solution that can be easily installed on an intercepted track. It generates high-density digital infrastructure measurements that can be archived, while monitoring their quality in real time to ensure the success of each mission.
The defects detected by PRIME are currently geolocated and georeferenced with an accuracy of a few dozen centimetres, with centimetre-level accuracy as the ultimate goal.
By combining autonomy, modularity, onboard intelligence and high-quality digital measurements, PRIME offers a flexible and efficient solution for the future of railway inspection and maintenance.

This solution has been developed within the EU-Rail Flagship Project FP3-IAM4RAIL. The project FP3-IAM4RAIL focuses on seven different integrated demonstrators for rail assets which are key for research and innovation in the rail sector.
