Digital Twin for Station Management

Challenge

Railway stations bring together a wide range of interconnected systems and equipment, making their configuration, monitoring and maintenance increasingly complex. Across Europe, digital technologies are being adopted to provide more integrated views of these environments and support operators in managing assets and responding to operational events.

 The solution

Europe’s Rail (EU-Rail) is addressing this evolution by developing Digital Twin solutions that connect digital station models with operational information.

Integrated into the ALVEA product of Hitachi Rail, a cloud-based microservices architecture, the Digital Twin (DT) for station management enables:

  • The use of BIM files to configure ALVEA products and the DT.
  • The use of BIM files to represent the station in 3D.
  • The representation of the equipment status within the3D model of the station.

Did you know?

The new features developed allow a reduction in station management system configuration and help maintenance and operations staffmakebetter decisions in case of complex equipment statuses or alarms.

Maturity level

TRL 7 (System prototype demonstration in operational environment )

Expected benefits

In addition to the primary benefit of reducing the time and costs associated with setting up and managing a station, the use of BIM improves the reliability and consistency of the overall system.

Maintenance and operations are more efficient and intuitive, reducing the time required for operators to learn the system and perform tasks.

Conclusion

Combining BIM and Digital Twin technologies, the EU-Rail solution contributes to more efficient station management and a more reliable operational environment. It supports better decision-making while reducing configuration and management costs, helping create safer and more efficient station operations.
