Decision Support for Railway Bridge Health Monitoring and Maintenance

Challenge

Railway bridges are exposed to continuously changing loads and environmental conditions throughout their service life. Understanding how these factors affect their structural condition is key to anticipating deterioration, planning maintenance at the right time and extending the useful life of existing infrastructure. However, making these decisions requires reliable information on how bridges actually behave under real operating conditions.

 The solution

Europe’s Rail (EU-Rail) has developed a solution that is The solution is base don the fatigue analysis and modelling of two types of bridges. First, a steel bridge has been is monitored and digitally modelled to reduce uncertainties linked to the effects of fatigue, which is the main type of damage determining the remaining useful life of the bridge. Then, a concrete bridge has been monitored and digitally modelled to provide insights on the health status of a bridge subjected to high axle load and arctic environmental condition.

  • The solution can be seen as a set of methods and algorithms for the evaluation of the remaining useful life of a steel bridge and the condition assessment of a concrete bridge.
  • Both methods are intended to support decision-making procedures concerning the maintenance and renewal/replacement of railway bridges.

Readiness for Industrialisation and Deployment

The solution is tested in real environment on railway lines in regular operation, with both passenger and freight traffic (heavy haul in the case of concrete bridge solution).

Maturity level

TRL 6. The solution is considered to be at prototype or demonstrator level, with validation expected in a relevant railway environment.

Expected benefits

The solution can potentially increase the quality and quantity of information related to railway bridges in operation, providing a real-time indication of the bridge response to a passing train. In addition, trends can be detected through a medium-and long-term type of analysis, and conclusions can be drawn for future constructions. One of the advantages of implementing this solution is the optimisation of the use of resources allocated to maintenance and renewal.

Conclusion

Thanks to this solution, railway infrastructure managers can gain a clearer and more timely understanding of bridge condition and structural response, supporting more informed decisions on maintenance, renewal and the efficient allocation of resources.
