Simulation methods and models to enable more reliable and effective capacity of the railway network

Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking’s FP1-MOTIONAL project participants from Sweden, the Netherlands, France, and Spain, gathered in Luleå on 10 and 11 June 2025 to jointly work on preparing demonstrations for increased railway capacity solutions developed by the project. The focus of these solutions is to estimate the benefits of improved feedback loops between operations and planning to create robust optimised timetables. New technologies such as C-DAS, ATO, ETCS Level 2 with optimised braking curves, and ETCS Hybrid Level 3 have been evaluated to gain a better understanding of how these technologies can contribute to improved rail capacity and punctuality.
During the meeting in Luleå, a well-received site visit to LKAB’s facility was conducted as part of the preparations for the upcoming demonstration activities at Iron Ore Line (Malmbanan).
