FP5 – DACtiVate

Project Structure

FP5-DACtiVate project brings together 21 European partners from end-users, large industry, railway undertakingsoperators and wagon keepers, unions, SMEs, and research, thus, covering the entire value chain. The FP5-DACtiVate project is set to advance the full digitalization of freight train operations in Europe, building on prior initiatives such as S2R’s IP5, the EDDP, and EU-Rail’s FP5-TRANS4M-R. The project aims to enable the pre-deployment of pilot trains with Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC) by executing required additional tests to the complementary project FP5-TRANS4M-R, thus establishing confidence before full implementation, while enabling DAC-authorization processes. The project aims to test the interchangeability of DAC components, expand the number of Wagon Onboard Units in line with FP5-TRANS4M-R’s system architecture, and enable thorough validation of the pre-deployment trains by additional locomotives able to integrate hybrid couplers. Collaboration with FP5-TRANS4M-R is vital to align with its functional specifications and technical architecture, ensuring the project’s contribution is significant and supports the related DAC authorization process.

The detailed project breakdown structure is hereafter illustrated and explained.

WP1 Validation tests on Interface A capable DACs

WP1 key objective is to perform dedicated tests validating the readiness of the technologies for pre-deployment trains. The aim is to build trust in the solutions and demonstrate the fulfilment of the defined requirements.

WP2 “Mix and Match” test specification interface A, execution and validation preparation for DAC subsystem interchangeability

WP2 aims to provide initial tests for first results of interchangeability of DAC interface A coupler head/shank and draft gear across different DAC suppliers with the main goal to demonstrate the modular approach on subsystem level. The overall goal is a comprehensive test specification defined for a fully developed mix and match test aiming for the validation of interface A interchangeability of DAC couplers. This goal is defined in addition to the necessary interoperability of wagons equipped with homogenous couplers from different suppliers on the different wagons. WP2 aims to provide initial tests for first result of interchangeability of DAC interface A coupler head/shank and draft gear across different DAC suppliers. Those tests will be documented and provided as input for the risk analysis and validation plan. However the certification and authorization process is not in the scope of FP5-DACtiVate.

WP3 Dual Use Locomotive DAC Integration

Provide a locomotive platform for testing of a Hybrid-Digital-AutomaticCoupler and EDDP defined basic/starter package for pre-deployment train operations. Design a solution for locomotive-on-board unit and interoperable Human-Machine-Interface within existing locomotive fleet.

WP4 Wagon Onboard Units

Enabling the pre-deployment tests of FP5-TRANS4M-R by manufacturing and providing of wagon onboard unit prototypes.

WP5 Legacy Locomotives DAC Integration

Provide a shunting-locomotives for testing of a Hybrid-Digital-AutomaticCoupler and EDDP defined basic/starter package for pre-deployment train operations. Integrate a solution for locomotive-on-board unit and interoperable Human-Machine-Interface within existing locomotive fleet.

WP6 Project management, dissemination and communication

WP6 is dedicated to achieving the overall success of the project. This involves a set of specific objectives: Firstly, WP6 aims to execute project activities according to the planned timeline, allocated budget, and the predefined quality standards. Secondly, it involves the efficient compilation and provision of the necessary reports to the EU-Rail services. Furthermore, WP6 is responsible for guiding and closely monitoring the progress of the project to ensure that all deliverables are submitted within their respective deadlines. Additionally, WP6 plays a crucial role as an interface between the project and external stakeholders, facilitating effective communication and collaboration with the EC and other relevant parties. Further, objective of WP6 is to implement the project’s dissemination and communication activities to maximize visibility of the FP5-DACtiVate outcomes and results, thus attracting more active contributors for DAC migration activities.
