Project objectives

The main purpose of this project is to validate the FRMCS V2 Specifications & V3 target requirements with precommercial FRMCS system components in realistic operational conditions and to feed-back the result to the railway eco-system in order to timely start the migration to FRMCS across the European railway system.

Objective 1: Provide a future proof FRMCS architecture with the necessary telecommunication elements

  • 5G SA (Stand Alone) architecture (core and access);
  • IMS/SIP-core and MCX;
  • TOBA (Telecom On-Board Architecture) equipment;
  • Track Side Gateway;
  • Cab radio equipment (: Voice Application Subsystem (VAS));
  • Dispatcher;
  • Monitoring equipment (system and radio);
  • ETCS / ATO / TCMS simulators compatible with FRMCS interfaces, including (ETCS) PKI and KMS (national and international), based on H-2-N.

Objective 2: Test the necessary functions of the FRMCS V2 set of specifications

  • Voice functions for both drivers and controllers;
  • Railway Emergency Communication – REC (Combined REC alert and REC voice);
  • Data functions (including ETCS, ATO and TCMS applicative simulations);
  • Combination of voice and data applications;
  • Location and positioning service (e.g., Railway Emergency Communication, driver to controller communications based on driver’s location) and internal FRMCS System usage (e.g., FRMCS domain change);
  • Time service (e.g. timestamp for location reporting of REC);
  • Usage of various frequencies: RMR bands (900 and 1900 MHz) and some MNO band(s);
  • FRMCS multipath concepts using data paths of MNO and FRMCS/RMR;
  • FRMCS inter-domain transition and cross-border testing;
  • FRMCS domains interconnection (e.g., communications between users served by different FRMCS Service Domains);
  • GSM-R / FRMCS interworking and transition;
  • Interoperability between FRMCS components from various manufacturers;
  • Quality of Service with performance measurements at system and radio levels;
  • Cybersecurity (elements of).

Objective 3: Validation and return on experience

  • Provide material elements to confirm / correct / amend / evolve the FRMCS V2 set of specifications;
  • Communicate these elements to the UIC FRMCS Programme for the closing of FRMCS V3 set of specifications ahead of update of CCS TSI,
