As Europe’s railways expand, their safety and efficiency depend increasingly on knowing every train’s position....
The Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking (S2R JU) will have a strong presence in its first appearance InnoTrans, the largest rail fair in the world –presenting the first results of the initiative, barely two years after its creation.
At 12.00 pm, the stand (Hall 4.2./203) opens up with an official visit of the German Federal Minister for Transport Andreas Scheuer and EU Commissioner for Transport and Mobility Violeta Bulc, as part of the Opening Tour of InnoTrans 2018.
Then, Shift2Rail presents its wireless connected trams demonstrator. In a live broadcast demo, two trams located in Zaragoza in Spain move in a coordinated manner without any physical link at a constant distance of about 6 metres.
EU Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc participates at the demonstrator, controlling remotely from Berlin the trams’ destination displays using just a tablet.
Members of the JU then present several demonstrators in different areas of the railways eco-system, such as connected vehicles, noise mitigation, energy smart metering, and software for easy multi-modal travel booking.
The ceremony for both Shift2Rail Women in Rail and R&I Awards will follow. Commissioner Bulc will bestow the prize to the winners, working in Europe and beyond, to deliver the S2R Research & Innovation Programme.
Next, Shift2Rail JU and the South East Europe Alliance for Rail Innovation (SEESARI) sign a Cooperation Agreement at Shift2Rail’s stand.
At 13.00, Shift2Rail Members present three demonstrators at InnoTrans showing how the ‘moving block’ system works in urban, suburban, high speed and freight traffic management.
At 14.00, Shift2Rail Executive Director Carlo Borghini participates at the panel discussion “For an innovative and digital railway system: the key contribution of the European rail supply industry”, at UNIFE stand (Hall 4.2., Stand 302).
Dominique Riquet (Member of the European Parliament), Jean-François Aguinaga (Head of Unit, DG RTD), Parrondo (Vice-President, THALES; Chairman, European Rail Research Advisory Council – ERRAC), Philippe Citroën (Director General, UNIFE) will join Shift2Rail in the discussion. At 15.30, Shift2Rail will host a press event on ‘digitization of rail freight’, called by SNCF. CEO of SNCF Mobility Guillaume Pepy and Shift2Rail Executive Director Carlo Borghini participate. The event is presented by Bertrand Minary, Chief Innovation & Digital Officer at Fret SNCF, and Jacques Delort, General Manager at TRAXENS. More details available here.
At 16.00, Shift2Rail-funded researchers present the ‘Intelligent Video Gate’ demonstrator, able to recognise and transfer incoming and outgoing wagon data when crossing entering the terminal, using computer vision and RFID-readers for tagged wagons.
To close the day, at 18.00, Shift2Rail Executive Director Carlo Borghini will join Henrik Hololei, Director General for Mobility and Transport at the European Commission, for a high-level cocktail reception event at voestalpine’s stand (Hall 21, Stand 101).
