On September 3rd and 4th , 025, the ERJU FP6 FutuRe WP9 working group convened in Stockholm for an intensive two-day meeting, kindly hosted by the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Trafikverket (TRV). The meeting brought together experts and partners from across Europe to review the progress of ongoing demonstrators, exchange technical insights, and address key challenges in a collaborative setting.
Within FutuRe, WP9 plays a central role by demonstrating how new, innovative railway assets can be applied effectively to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) while ensuring high service quality and operational reliability. This work package focuses on the development of ten demonstrators that showcase optimised and innovative solutions designed to make regional railway systems more attractive and cost-efficient. Among the core technological fields are wireless energy self-sufficient wayside assets, obstacle detection systems, wireless communication links to wayside assets, and new concepts for communication systems.
The Stockholm meeting offered participants the opportunity to gain in-depth insights into the current status of each demonstrator, to openly discuss technical challenges, and to explore collaborative solutions. This transparent and cooperative approach is essential to ensure that the demonstrators deliver technical excellence and real-world relevance for operators and infrastructure managers. By addressing issues collectively and combining the expertise of research institutions, industry players and infrastructure managers, the group can come up with solutions that no single organisation could achieve alone. Beyond the technical outcomes, such gatherings also foster the collaborative spirit and mutual understanding that is fundamental to the FutuRe initiative as a whole.
WP9’s contribution to FutuRe goes far beyond the development of prototypes. It demonstrates how innovative technologies can be integrated into real operational contexts, laying the groundwork for an optimised, more cost-efficient and customer-oriented regional railway system across Europe. The work being carried out in WP9 will help to set new standards for communication systems and automation of assets within regional railways, ultimately contributing to the European Union’s overall rail innovation agenda.
