As part of the preparations and impact assessment for the next legislative framework governing European partnerships...
The railway sector is adopting digital and data-driven technologies to improve asset management and maintenance. By combining condition monitoring, historical information and advanced analytics, these technologies can provide a more comprehensive view of asset health and support more effective maintenance decisions.
Europe’s Rail (EU-Rail) is taking this approach forward with solutions that enable more intelligent and adaptive maintenance planning, including a Decision Support Tool for Dynamic maintenance planning based on holistic asset condition analysis from multiple sources.
This solution enables:
The solution enhances reliability by preventing failures, reduces downtime through targeted maintenance and increases resource efficiency by aligning workforce allocation with the actual needs of the assets. Additionally, it enables adaptive planning based on data that evolves according to asset behaviour and environmental conditions.
The solution is a prototype demonstrated in a relevant environment (TRL 6). Demonstrated in high-speed passenger line, it has been deployed in several locations. It is available for prototype testing in other markets (e.g. freight, regional and metro). The solution is ready for further maturity development towards TRL 7/8.
The integrated IAMS demonstrator is ready for pilot‑phase deployment and further validation during 2026, with the goal of progressing toward full integration within Europe’s Rail operational frameworks.
TRL 6. The prototype has been deployed and tested in relevant environment. Specific and meaningful locations were identified, together with ADIF Infrastructure Manager, to deploy the solution and collect the data used to feed it. Additional datasets were used to verify the conclusions obtained, ensuring that TRL 6 has been achieved.
The solution increases the availability of lines and the assets, while optimising maintenance costs by wisely allocating the resources when and where they are needed, optimising inspection schedules and enabling proactive interventions.
It also helps optimise workforce allocation by adjusting timetables and maintenance actions dynamically according to the current status of the asset.
Through the EU-Rail solution, maintenance teams can benefit from earlier detection and more targeted interventions, supporting infrastructure availability and sustainability. It also helps reduce costs and create a more reliable environment at stations through more efficient maintenance planning.

This solution has been developed within the EU-Rail Flagship Project FP3-IAM4RAIL. The project FP3-IAM4RAIL focuses on seven different integrated demonstrators for rail assets which are key for research and innovation in the rail sector.
