We are delighted to share with our Members, projects, partners and stakeholders the news that the European Commission has proposed 2021 as the European Year of Rail! The initiative will be a game changer for positioning rail at the heart of achieving the European Green Deal. Interested in knowing more about rail research and innovation, and its innovation potential to shape the future of mobility and transport? Together with the European Commission, Shift2Rail is ready to bring you all this during a special year dedicated to rail – the rail you use every day, and that brings you to your dream destinations, and in such critical times is also committed to serve those in need!

It is a fantastic occasion to further raise awareness of rail as amongst the most sustainable and safest modes of transport, and its potential to become the backbone of our future sustainable, climate-neutral mobility and transport system. Moreover, if adopted, it will represent ample opportunities for Shift2Rail to showcase its work, and we are committed to support the initiative and make it a success.

In view of the European Green Deal and the future Shift2Rail initiative, this proposal is very timely as it can provide the needed momentum and ideal platform for the launching and development of our next ambitious R&I programme, which will sustain the competitiveness of the European rail industry to meet future mobility needs of EU citizens.

Should the proposal be adopted by the European Parliament and Council, it will provide potential interesting opportunities to our Members and partners.

We will be sure to keep you closely informed about this major initiative, and assure you of Shift2Rail’s intention to fully endorse it.
